Description
Found in the warmer climates of the southern US, the anhinga is an interesting waterfowl that often swims underwater when hunting. Once the next meal is spotted the anhinga, also known by common names of snake bird, darter, and devil bird, stabs its prey with its sharp dagger-like bill. An unusual trait of this bird, making it unlike most other water birds, is the fact that they do not have waterproof feathers. After being in the water, they sit on a branch or shore and extend their wings out to dry their feathers. The anhinga is a brand new bird for me, and on the day I took this image, I saw this action several times but wasn't sure what they were doing. I think their plumage is very pretty when viewed from the back as in this image...the pattern of the lighter colored feathers against the black body is especially nice!
