Description
While visiting the Cape of Good Hope on a recent trip to Africa, I noticed many of these large, wading birds sitting among the rocks along the shore. I knew that I had never seen a bird quite like this, but had no idea what they were until doing research upon returning home. The African sacred ibis can be found at many locations on the continent of Africa as well as in the middle east and Madagascar. They were prominent in the religious practices of ancient Egyptians, this the "sacred" part of the name. A quiet bird that only grunts and groans, the sacred ibis is generally about 27 inches long and has an average wingspan of four feet. I wish now that I would have tried harder to get a flying photo, but I was so caught up in the moment of just being at the Cape of Good Hope that I didn't even think about it at the time.
