Description
A must-see in Cape Town, Kirstenbosch Gardens provides a beautiful walk through lush gardens, literally a botanical paradise. Colorful blooms everywhere you turn are accented by quiet walkways, bridges, and benches that encourage visitors not to be in a rush. Sculptures are also featured in various places along the way. This one was at the entrance/exit and caught my attention because of its simple beauty and highlights as the waning evening light was bringing an end to a wonderful day in South Africa. Upon doing a little research later, I learned that these sculptures are done in the Shona tradition which began in Zimbabwe in the 1970's, largely due to the vision of Frank McEwen who encouraged young artists to pursue their artistic talents. They are called Mambo stone pieces, although the primary stone used is the serpentine stone which is extremely hard and durable. It was somewhat of an afterthought that I backtracked a bit and took this image and now I'm so glad I did. It evokes a wonderful memory of a great day!
